DT800 communication

Hi, I do not have RS-232 port on my laptop. Can I use LPT1 or LAN port for communication with DT800?

Thank you.

Good afternoon amoysea,

No you can't use the LPT1 port, but you can use the LAN port with a red (Cross over) Ethernet cable.

We do carry a USB to serial converter that works very well please contact your dataTaker dealer for price and availability.

Cheers,
Roger

Hi, Roger,

I haven't been on the site for a while. Simply, had no problems. But, the good life did not last. I am working on a system using DT800 (ver 4.06.0001, Flash 2004/09/07 09:46:28) and need to connect it to a PC USB port (no serial available).PC is an Acer laptop with XP Home OS.

Have purchased Belkin F5U409-CU adaptor. It gives me problems. While I can CONNECT to DT800, (via COM PORTS) the connection is only possible when using FORCE CONNECTION. With that connection, everything seems to work with the exception of UNLOAD. Thus I cannot transfer data back to PC.

Have you ever heard of that problem? Also, noted you carry a converter in your stock. What type it is?

Would appreciate some guidance,
Regards,
Chris H

Good morning Chris,

Not all USB to serial converters are created equal....
We have tested a large number of them and only found two that work.
The best of these is the one we carry on our stock list.

The problem you are seeing is due to the status request timing out and is probably due to timing problems in the converter.
The status info tells the program how the logger is configured, channel names etc.

As you are a local give sales a call for a price.

Cheers,
Roger

Hi, Roger,

All is well! Have purchased the USB adapter, as per your advice, and it is working well. Thanks.

I still wonder what makes it so special. But, that would be another topic.

Thanks again
Chris

Good morning Chris,

Now this we have spent a lot of time looking into.
We think it all has to do with the timing in the actual adapter.

RS232 is a continuous stream of data while USB works with packets.
There is also hand shaking etc etc... All this has to work in real time in both directions so if the timing is slightly off then problems pop up.

Cheers,
Roger
