Hi,

I am not good at doing the text versions of the program. I want to write a program for 2 units of gill ultrasonic windmaster anemometer, both of them will be using the serial ports.

For one of the ports I can see there is provision on the front panel and the second one as suggested by the manual host ports can be used. My question is with the program builder how do I do this?

How do I program the host port to use as a serial sensor? When I click serial option in the program window then I get a complex as type the there is a series of input information that I can add and there is also a channel number that I can choose. So if i choose channel 2 that will be "2SERIAL", will DT80 accept host port as a serial port?

Good morning Avishek,

There are several steps in getting the system going:

  1. Configure the wind sensor.
    Use the manufacturers software to configure the wind sensor to suit your requirements:

    a. You will need to set the RS232 communications settings (baud rate etc)
    b. Configure the message type. I would recommend you use the ASCII format as described on page 12 of the user manual.

    Make sure you record what you have set because we will need to use this to program the dataTaker. As you have two sensors it would probably be easier to configure both units the same.

  2. Configure the the DT80 to read the sensor.
    a. Communications to the devices.
    As you have two RS232 devices you will connect one to the serial sensor port and the other to the host port.

    You will need to change the profile setting to do this. In DeLogger5 connect to the DT80 then from the top menu click on dataTaker > Profile. This will open a dialog box. Expand out the HOST_PORT section and enter the communications parameters to match those set in the wind sensor. Also change the Function to Serial. This is all done from drop down menus.

    Then expand the section SERSEN_PORT and set the comms parameters for the serial sensor port. When you have set all the parameters click the Ok button and the logger will reset and load the new settings.

    b. Reading data from the device.
    This will depend on how and what you have programmed the wind sensor to output. For the moment configure and connect the wind sensors and then let us know what you have set up and we can tackle it from there.

I did find the Host Port option in the profile menu but could not find the SERSEN_PORT options . the only other options are Ethernet , host modem and FTP Server and PPP. I am using Delogger pro 4 version.

The Gill Instruments for 3D ultrasonic sensor suggests that if the wire length is above 6.5m, RS232 connection is not recommended. As I have to use 2 of the sensor , I am hoping to use an adapter for RS422/RS232 at the host port and a direct RS422 connection in the Serial Port at the front display.

But when I am using the front display, how do I use the PS command option in the program builder wizard ( as i am not using the text mode for programming) so that DT80 recognize that i am using a RS422 signal.

These options are only available in DeLogger5. If you wish to keep using DeLogger4 then the profile commands can be sent from the text window.

If you want to use the PS command to set the comms parameters then it is available in the immediate schedule of the program builder. Select Serial in the "Signal" column and PS in the "Type". select wiring to enter the comms parameters.

P.S.: How's the snow in Nepal? Can you send some over here? We've just a string of days over 40 deg peaking at just over 45 degC on Thursday.

I will install the 5 version and give it a go.

Can't parcel u the snow unfortunately as I am in Perth currently experiencing the same half melted already.
