The plan is to use a DT85 with a SMSX modem as a method of connection. Unfortunately I am having difficulty in getting a this to work. I am using sim cards where the carrier is Vodaphone, but the provider is BT.

I have a terminating Data Number, (as far as I know) - I have two different numbers for the Sim, one regular number to call the phone & one data line.

I am trying to connecting using a Vodaphone PCMCIA 3G modem Card connected to my laptop - all of the information I can find about it is as follows: Option / Qualcomm GT 3G Quad Band CDMA - Which coms up on device manager as a Fusion UMTS Quad-GPRS - 3G Modem - It has reserved com7 & com8 for applications & Diagnostic interfaces.

I cannot get it to connect to the SMSX modem, When using DeLogger Pro, it comes up "trying to connect" - then "line idle" - then "closing connection"... I have tried using the regular wired modem, this won't connect to it either, but it will connect to another dataTaker setup elsewhere... - I guess this means I have a problem with the connection at both ends!

I am beginning to get really frustrated with it! Am I just p*ssing in the wind with this one? - I do hope not, as I really want to have a wireless connection to it so I can be anywhere and still download data or re-program the device.

Sorry for getting carried away, but after writing that post I just realized that I needed to change the settings to create a new profile using the Vodaphone Connection manager & change the connection type to Circuit Switched - so SCD - HSCSD

And the answer is yes, you can use the 3G datacard to connect!

Now I really am talking to myself!

Despite being able to connect a few times, I have now brought my laptop home, and attempted to connect from here, and now it doesn't want to work. So, I would say the connection is temperamental.

What I have found from this is that if i boot the laptop with the 3G card connected it doesn't connect, but if I eject the card, then reinsert it, I can get it to connect - I think...

I guess this means there is some software control conflict between the Vodaphone Connection Manager & the way the DeLogger Pro wants to use the modem.

Does anyone have any advice to help me out?

Good morning Gareth,

it looks like your modem is not installed into your Windows OS correctly.

DeLogger4 uses the Windows TAPI (Telephony Application Programmers Interface) so unless the modem is correctly installed into your Winodws OS it won't work or won't work correctly.

What would you suggest then? - Do you think I should try the old "un-install re-install" regime? - Or is there something more subtle that can be done?

I must admit, its not within my usual realm of expertise. I suppose I could try uninstalling the Vodaphone Connection Manager software, then just try to find the driver for the modem portion of the combined wireless & modem card, and install just that driver?

anyway, I'm off to Bed (its 11:30 pm here) I'll let you know how I get on in the morning.

Yep, Friday morning, just got in when I sent the first reply.

Check your modem in installed correctly. On Windows XP. Start > Settings > Control panel > System. Select the Hardware Tab and then Click on device manager > Modems. Then select your modem type from the list and double click. Then select the Diagnose tab and query modem. Then wait for the report.

This will tell you if the modem is working correctly. If that doesn't work then have a chat to the people you bought the modem from and /or find the manufacturers web page and ask for help there.

So I guess this means it is OK?

I don't really understand what it was, but I can now, it seems, get a reliable connection. - I think the other issue is that at home, where I was trying to connect the other night, the Vodaphone Coverage is not excellent. Which would possibly explain some patchy connections.
