Use DT80M where no 3G coverage

Hi,
I need to use DT80M in area where there is no 3G coverage. At a similar location, we are using DT80 with external GSM modem connected to host port and using dial up connection to save the data remotely. Can we use the same approach with DT80M?

The SIM card also without GPRS service. It has only voice number and data dial up number.

TQ [Chandran]

Good morning Chandran,

The modem in the DT8xM3-3 is duel band.
If the 3G can't connect it will automatically try the 2G network.

Cheers

Roger

In this case, can we do a dial up connection and setup as PPP?

Good afternoon Chandran,

Yes you can dial and create a PPP connection to the DT80.

Notes:
The connection will be VERY slow so trying to access the web services (e.g dEX) will be correspondingly slow.
The DT80 with an external modem will not be able to create PPP connection out so it won't be able to send email or FTP data etc.

If you want this approach then you should look at a router modem combination and creating a local Ethernet connection to the logger.

Cheers

Roger

Hi Roger,

The manual says :
Note While DT8xM models do use PPP to connect to the mobile network, there is no need for any of the PPPconfiguration
described in this section in order to use the integrated modem.

How do we use dial up to establish connection to DT80M?

I don't think that DT80M can manage GSM dial-up calling, but I'll be happy if I'm wrong and this feature is instead possible :D . I think that the GSM network is used for SMS only.

So with DT80M (without host RS232, "internally" used for the integrated router connection) you'll need a GSM modem with ethernet interface, I don't know if anything similar is available on the market.

Tks Mr. Teo,

The place we install doesn't have 3G coverage. That's our biggest problem. Hope there is a solution for this.

Good morning Chandan,

You can not dial into the DT80, it created a Ethernet connection to the DT80 and you use a network connection to communicate with it.

Cheers

This Phoenix Contact product may help you (2314008 or 2313355) : http://catalog.phoenixcontact.net/phoenix/treeViewClick.do;jsessionid=Rh9MJGDNLvLLG30xvfsDGbLTShtYQZnJTn0ypTGcYZlDS9dK91T2!-1805522809?UID=852719265&parentUID=&reloadFrame=true.

I've never used it, you may contact your local Phoenix Contact supplier to understand if it can handle dial-in connection; if so you can interface it to the DT80M via ethernet interface. The data unload may be done using DeTransfer or DeLoad.

Good luck.

Tq Teo,
I am getting closer. I am using streamyx account to send out email. I have 2 questions here.
1) Can the recipient email be gmail (SSL authentication)?
2) How can we put the port number for smtp server? My smtp server is mail.uit.com.my, port is 465.

Tq again [Chandran]

Ok, so can I assume that the data packet connection works now and you don't need any dial in connection??
So far as I know SSL is not supported by DT8xM; typically the port used for SSL is 465. Give a look here: http://www.datataker.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=81&p=350&hilit=ssl&sid=957611b9f8e3c333111b3e13bed862fc&sid=7d20ef0193cb63bd00e3c1278f5669e4#p350

I'm trying get the dt to send out email data everyday. I believe it should work on 2G as well, even though it is slow.

Good morning Chandran,

No the DT80 does not support SSL, which means you can not use a gmail account.
Please refer to page 202 of the DT80 User manual (UM-0085-B7)

And no you can not change the port number for your email accounts. I will add this request to our database for future consideration.

Cheers

Roger
